چکیده

We report an unexpectedly rich variety of new flow patterns on a granular heap that is centrifuged so as to simulate the reduction in gravity. These surface patterns exhibit coexisting static and flowing regions that depend strongly on centrifugal stress, but surprisingly not on mass flow rate. A discrete cellular automaton model reproduces some of the patterning features and indicates that subsurface jamming may precipitate the formation of localized frozen patterns on the surface. This model provide insights into the mechanics of granular flows under controlled stress environment and jammed-to-flowing transitions in granular media.

Kinematics of mono- and bidisperse granular flow in quasi-two-dimensional bounded heaps

Quasi-two-dimensional (2D) bounded heap flow is a useful model for granular flows in many industrial processes and natural phenomena. It belongs to the family of free surface flows inclined chute flow, rotating tumbler flow, and unbounded heap flow but is different from all of them in that the uniform deposition of particles onto the static bed results in the uniform rise of the heap and presum...

The growth of a Super Stable Heap : an experimental and numerical study

– We report experimental and numerical results on the growth of a super stable heap (SSH). Such a regime appears for flows in a thin channel and for high flow rate : the flow occurs atop a nearly static heap whose angle is stabilized by the flowing layer at its top and the side wall friction. The growth of the static heap is investigated in this paper. A theoretical analysis inspired by the BRC...

Rheology of confined granular flows : from gas to glass

An intriguing feature of granular matter is the close coexistence of solid-like regions and liquid-like flows. We study steady, fully-developped, granular flows confined between parallel vertical sidewalls. The sidewall friction stabilizes the underlaying heap at an inclination exceeding the angle of repose and increasing with flow rate. Our experiments reveal, in agreement with numerical simul...

Wall effects on granular heap stability

– We investigate the effects of lateral walls on the angle of movement and on the angle of repose of a granular pile. Our experimental results for beads immersed in water are similar to previous results obtained in air and to recent numerical simulations. All of these results, showing an increase of pile angles with a decreasing gap width, are explained by a model based on the redirection of st...

A Free Interface Model for Static/Flowing Dynamics in Thin-Layer Flows of Granular Materials with Yield: Simple Shear Simulations and Comparison with Experiments

Flows of dense granular materials comprise regions where the material is flowing, and regions where it is static. Describing the dynamics of the interface between these two regions is a key issue to understanding the erosion and deposition processes in natural environments. A free interface simplified model for non-averaged thin-layer flows of granular materials has been previously proposed by ...
